Emotions are central to our lives, influencing everything from our actions to our cognition, shaping how we evaluate the world and interact with others. Despite their significance, emotions were often overlooked in 20th-century analytic philosophy. However, in recent decades, they have become a key focus.
This course offers an exploration into the nature, theories, and normative dimensions of emotions, drawing primarily from Christine Tappolet's Philosophy of Emotion: A Contemporary Introduction.
Each week, we will read one chapter from Tappolet’s book (mandatory) alongside a supplementary academic article related to that chapter (optional). Through these readings, we will engage with contemporary debates on the metaphysics, epistemology, and practical implications of emotions. The course will cover topics such as the nature of emotions, their relationship to belief, their rationality, and their role in practical reason, ethics, and aesthetics. Students will actively participate in discussions, present on supplementary readings, and complete a final essay that reflects on the course's key themes.
Die Veranstaltung findet jede Woche statt.
